these were shot a few years ago- i cant remember exactly when- in Monroe & Columbia, Louisiana. i recently took the film out of the camera & when i saw it was slide film [and the only option is to send it off to have it processed and wait weeks] i decided to have it cross-processed @ wal-mart. the lady in the foto department did NOT want to do it, saying "it'll ruin your film!" So i asked 'well, will it hurt your chemicals?" when she said 'NO"- i said "Okay... DO it!"

all shots shot were made with an Olympus point & shoot -using Fuji Superia slide film processed as C-41 [cross-processed] @ Wal_mart. i liked the results so much that i have begun a new series, with the same camera, same film.

this is actually a scan of the backing paper/emulsion side from the Polaroid i shot today. i was trying out my "new" Bronica S2A- it came with a Polaroid back, and there just happened to be one shot left- so i put on the back and asked Jacqueline to be my subject. the actual foto was nice- if a bit discolored because the film was so old- but i noticed the 'image' was also on the paper/emulsion when i peeled the film apart- i decided to scan it, but it was still gooey- AND i hadnt set up my new scanner- by the time i did that the paper had dried somewhat- and this is what i got- after doing some 'equalzing' in Photoshop.

i loaded the bronica with some 120 B&W film and IF it isnt snowing tomorrow, i'll take it out for some test shots. i should shoot some Fasnacht fotos with it.

i feel like i must have [or people must think i have] cindy sherman/lucas samaras syndrome, what with all the self portraits i post. i think i "shoot myself" mostly out of boredom. i'll see a polaroid or my digital camera lying around, pick it up and "click"; sometimes i get an interesting result...sometimes not. the sx-70 w/600 film usually yields something of interest, just because the film is too fast for the camera.

what i like about CS and LS is that they created situations/sets and posed IN them; photographers shooting portraits of themselves as other people/subjects. i havent quite gotten to that, except for halloween/mardi gras shots!

these are only a few of my cameras here in switzerland... even though i've carted most home, there are more here in the shelves, night stands, under the bed and couch... and god knows where else. i'm like an alcoholic who stashes his liquor then forgets where he hid it! and of course, not remembering, i brought even more with me! [not shown]

i plan to use the oldie Agfa medium formats to shoot in zermatt next trip up/down on the train, and/or while there... i need some medium format FILM shots of the mountains, snow, streams, etc. i didn't bring the rollei or the yashicamat...so, fixed focus is gonna have to do.

i recently went to new orleans for prospect 1- and took over 30 cameras, which ALL had film in them that i had meant to shoot- to test the cameras. out of the 30, i might have finished off only 5 rolls! oh well... at least they're loaded for when i head home.

i left most of my cameras in Louisiana. i tried to pare down and only brought my nikon, a diana, 2 plastic vivitars, polaroid sx70, my sony video camera- 2 casio exilims. i might have thrown my old kodak pony 135 in my suitcase- it makes great double exposures. i also have an arsenal over here- my friend boris brought me a lot of old russian cameras a while back- and i have some others that i left here; a great old kowa, and maybe one of my all time favorites: a cosina.

my one big entertainment when here [europe] -when I"M not entertaining- is hitting the 2nd hand shops, and salvation army stores in search of cameras and lenses. i have gotten some real treasures. so, i know i'll be adding to the collection while here. it's a disease.

unfortunately it is so cold at the moment here in zermatt - minus 10 Celsius- that i have not been going out to shoot anything at all. i shot a bunch of digital stuff en route and from the train, but, haven't even been making photos in the hotel or the bar since i got here. i wrap up and walk out on the balcony to smoke, and shoot the matterhorn, daily... as it is just right there. but i have never been real big on landscape photography- except for the funky south.

i hope to do some night shots in bern and zurich -for the blur series- once i am off the mountain. but there are some great old barns and things here- hundreds of years old- that i should shoot; stuff i've probably already shot... since i have been coming here since the mid 90s.

papa's got a brand new blog

as if i didn't have enough blogs and merde flying around, i put up another blog of "VERNACULAR PHOTOGRAPHY" [as i found it was called] meaning= old found photos; i discovered that 'name' in some magazine i saw in the doctor's office.

i've been collecting old photos & negatives for years; starting with my family's. i got my mom and dad's, grandmother's, and several aunt's collections. i began buying them in thrift stores as well. i've been buying up all the old slides i can find in European thrift stores [it amazes me that family's would throw them out!] and i have huge boxes full- literally thousands of slides- in switzerland. i scanned a lot over the years and saved them [at hi-resolution, in case i decided to print any] to my computer, so decided to begin showing some online in lower resolution.

i also collect old cameras- and have sometimes found unfinished rolls of film in them. i had some of the film processed at wally-world, but after finding some semi risque stuff, was a bit afraid of what MIGHT be on there; you never know! so, i hand process any b&w, now! but i have several rolls of color 620 film i found in cameras that need to be sent off. i've also bought negatives in junk stores, which i scan.

on the new blog, i am mixing the format: images from slides, fotos, negatives, polaroids etc which i have found or bought. i really find them fascinating. i've even considered editing [cleaning up, possibly grey scaling] some of them and exhibiting them. the slides/Polaroids- ARE the originals, and therefore the 'negative'- and since i bought them, i own them, and therefore the copyrights. SO an exhibit/and possible sale of some of them is possible in the future.

as said, i own thousands of vintage slides. i plan to eventually donate them to the fotomuseum in winterthur, switzerland- since the majority of the stuff is swiss, shot by swiss... and needs to stay in switzerland, where future generations of swiss [and foreign visitors to the museum] can enjoy them.
i would also have the peace of mind of knowing they would be cared for.

okay... call me crazy, but i think these 'brass band' fotos look like impressionist paintings! they look timeless. i've scanned these negatives at very high resolution to be blown up 3 feet by 5 feet! yeah baby! can't wait to see them! BUT i might just make 16 x 20 prints from the negatives, myself... old school.

i just went to B&H and Adorama to price peel apart pack film- for my Land cameras and was shocked to see the jump in prices! Fuji has taken up the mantle of Polaroid and is cheaper, BUT the old B&WPolaroid peel apart pack film is the best- has the best tones. i did some series in Prague, Bern, and on Hwy 80 [from monroe to vicksburg] w/it and got some really good stuff.
thank god a friend gave me about 400 packs of 600 color instant pack film- which i have in 3 different refrigerators- and will use with the sx70 and my normal Polaroid cameras. i love the land cameras and their reults BUT on prinicple i am NOT going to 'go there' at the moment... and since i have a few backs in reserve. i can always shoot the 600 color, scan it at 4800 dpi, greyscale, and edit in photoshop. c'est la vie... mais, quel que fois, la vie est merde, absolutement!

sept 24th, 2008- shreveport- post benfit jam fotos- drinking and playing dress up. the sx70 is great for this- due to 600 film being 4x too fast for the camera, it usually works well in low light situations. it also has a focus wheel, and lighten/darken wheel, BUT i sometimesforgot to focus, which is all the better... like thomas ruff! okay NOT that extreme yet!

harrah's casino -new orleans [9.27.08] the bar near the canal street entrance was wild! absolute decadence! a round bar w/a gazillion tv/video screens, around a huge lighted column; a dee-jay atop blaring, and go-go girls on the catwalk at the top of the column, as well as on pedestals on the floor. it was visual overload; especially with everyone milling around, dancing, with drinks or Styrofoam boxes of food...and that carpet! lawd lawd. gotta go back and shoot more!

these were shot sunday [9.28.08] using my old Polaroid Land 210 camera- and peel apart black and white Polaroid film. i love this camera and film and the results they get. i've been saving the film for a road trip, but unfortunately didn't have the time to really search out subject matter. i plan to finish my Hwy 80 series [going westward] soon- and also shoot in and around vicksburg and natchez with this camera, soon. i hope Fuji continues to make pack film, since polaroid has stopped!

some shots from bourbon street from my week-end in new orleans. i used my 35mm film slr -using kodak bw400 film- using the bulb [B] setting, with the lens wide open; no flash. it was a test, guessing how long to hold the shutter open to get the blurs, but i wanted to try and get some titarenko type shots. next time i go i will take one of my medium format cameras to experiment further.

i also shot some things w/the lens wide open but the 'auto' setting on, which got very clear photos in low/no light- but i wanted the blur, the motion.

i love making photos of places where people have put up posters, signs, fliers etc. and others have ripped them down to put theirs up. eventually they end up looking like collages. i shoot these whenever i see them, and have done that all over Europe since about 1991. i scanned these negatives at 2400 DPI- so they can be blown up. i could crop them more, but rather like the torn tape on the outside edges. these were shot in switzerland.

i shot this by a lamp, using a Polaroid Spirit w/600 film- then gray-scaled and equalized it in Photoshop. it looks like old german expressionism.

this was a SX-70 mistake. i was shooting the muffin tins in a brown paper bag, last night w/the sx-70. because there was no light in the bag the shutter froze- so i pulled it out and pointed it at myself- which caused this weird double exposure. looks very Dada- like a gas mask or something!

shop windows- west monroe- shot at dusk today using Polaroid 600 film in a Polaroid sx-70- no filter- enhanced w/Photoshop. i'm amazed these came out at all. the actual prints are very light; but, when i hit 'equalize' the colors popped out. Photoshop covers a multitude of sins.

i'm not usually into loud colors- but i do like reflections and blurs and such, which these have.

the 600 film pack quit working in the 1-Step, so i took it out and put it in the SX-70 and shot this 'test' shot. i didn't think the photo would come out at all, so decided to manipulate it. i saw a hairbrush close by, so took it and began beating the photo w/it as it developed; the bristles caused all the blue squiggly varicose veins looking lines; the darker patch across my mouth was where the film had stuck in the 1-Step. i scanned it in photoshop and did some work... i like this...

one step- sx-70... TRICKS!

i discovered a few new tricks to do with these cameras- as the 600 film is so fast in these cameras. one- i shot the television [was watching b&w movies]- which made for nice but strange images. then i scanned/darkened the Polaroids in photoshop:

i shot some stuff in the house- in low light- and it came out- but not totally clear- BUT 600 film in the 1-step and Sx-might make for very interesting night low-light shots. but daytime... forget it... everything comes out white- BUT there are solutions for daytime: filters!

i went online to ebay and found they have 'filters' for Polaroid 1-step and Sx-70 "so you can use 600 film"; but, they were expensive. one was just some grey-ish mylar like plastic sheet which you place over the film pack before inserting it- the other were nice glass filters, specially made in japan. but again... both were over 24$, which seems dumb for a 1$ thrift store camera!- AND if a friend hadn't given me an abundance of 600 film, i wouldn't be doing all this trial and error BS! but sometimes from trial and error you accidentally get art!

BUT i found -on a roll of B&W film i'd just developed- one or two frames that hadn't come out. they were kind of grey; and so... i cut out and stuck a little round bit of a frame/film over the lens-then went outside and shot something... and it worked! not great, not perfect, but better that the total white i'd gotten before. so my theory is- any kind of grey film/plastic material would probably work. maybe a piece of some kind of light grey plastic cut and tapes over the lens?

below: shot without the film over- this was a very dark tree lined lane- shot at almost dusk!

so... the other option is to only shoot w/these cameras [1-Step/SX-70] at night when using 600 film- maybe in a bar or cafe, or at nighttime in city light, etc. that could make for some interesting stuff- blurs and weird tones. that might be my next shoot. will post if i get something good.

i took the film out of the "One-Step" when it started screwing up and put it in the "One Step Closeup"- it spat out all the remaining film out- plain white on all shots- i grabbed them and mashed them up- then scanned them and got things like the above- which i photo-shopped; reminds me of 1960s light shows!--- i might also take a few snaps them mash them as the picture 'comes up' to see what happens. this was kind of cool- a happy accident.

thinking something was wrong with even that camera i stuck in a new pack of film- went outside and tried a self portrait- [i blurred it some in photoshop]- and it worked fine. i guess it wanted it's own pack of film! thank s to a friend i have hundreds!

AND ONE MORE THING: i went back to the link i posted earlier and read more: and realized that the Polaroid sx-70 [discontinued] film was obviously 4x slower than todays 600- that's why all the outdoor shots i did today came out white! SO i tried some shots in the house [night] and they worked! they have a yellow tint- but that's rather ok. now to find/make a little filter for the camera lens-so i can shoot outside!

i dont know why i f++k with this as i have about 10+ various polaroid cameras- my OCD has kicked in again...

polaroid one-step - 600 film- fix

okay- as said in an earlier post-the Polaroid One Step quit working 1/2 way through a fresh pack of 600 film- which i'd forced in! when it wouldn't work, i took the film out... but couldn't get it back in.
today i went to the Polaroid website and read that you can shave off the little nibs on the back of Polaroid 600 film and it will fit! i shaved the nibs off w/a steak knife- but even so, the fotos are now coming out too light... it could be the camera... what do i expect for 1$?

this photo was made in the 1960s- [probably in monroe] - it got cut in half at some point and i just merged the two [badly] today. it's me and raymond battillo- he was the drummer with "white lighting" - i played keyboards [vox organ and key bass- later hammond b3 and foot pedals] sang and wrote some of the material. i dont remember if this was before or after the band was formed or disbanded. i seem to recall it was when we in transition from one band to another, but cant remember which! "white lighting' was a psychedelic rock/soul band from the ark-la-miss [bill dunn: vocals, sax and flute; dabney tannehill: guitar and vocals]- we moved to colorado [1st to nederland, then to denver] where we became house band at the Exodus. what a wild and crazy time it was!

A self portrait i made today; trying out the "new" 2nd-hand polaroid land 104 camera i got for 1$ in a junk store in shreveport. obviously i had it too close to my face-and forgot to move the tabs for "close up"! blur!
and finally- a sharp foto- made of my back back yard [past my back fence, going to my woods]

self portraits w/ Polaroid One Step [shot by a table lamp]

i went to a party in shreveport last night, and hit some junk stores today before coming home. i found an old Polaroid one step and got it - and also another old "peel apart film" Polaroid 104 Land camera, and a 3D camera. very weird camera. cant wait to try it out.

i'll post the 3D stuff -and polaroid 104 stuff- when i run a roll/pack through it. i cleaned the cable ends and hooked up a battery in the 104 and the shutter worked... so voila! it might be cool because it has two different size lens 'holes'- one big one for color and a small one for b&w- but, i think the color setting would work with low light. i'll play with it when i get up!

the above are test shots i did with some fresh 600 film w/the One Step. as it doesn't have a flash i stood by a bedside lamp. the camera seems to stick/pause when you press the button, which makes for blurry images... which i like.

while trying to sort my photo files today [on about 4 different external hard drives] i came across this photo of me as a child, eating watermelon on the front porch of our old family home [where i still live]- both i and the house have changed a lot since then!

my mama made this photo and to me it is amazing - it's as good as dorothea lange's or walker evans' best work in capturing a place in time... in this case, Louisiana 1950s. i have a lot of old family photos she made, and she made a lot; some are really remarkable. i still have her old kodak 120 film camera. in a lot of the old family photos mama has the camera hanging around her neck.

i've been shooting a lot of fotos- but haven't been posting them. i shot some stuff in chitzen itza, cozumel, new orleans, mississippi, and here in monroe this month. i've been using a variety of cameras: old Polaroid Land 210[B&W peel apart film]- it's my favorite-and another 600 Polaroid [color] i got for 2 bucks at goodwill- the flash was broken off it-but i don't shoot Polaroid at night anyway- so, don't need the flash. i hate flash. it works great- always ready. i've also been using my various toy cameras [35mm and 120- Diana & Flocon], some SLRs, and digital [casio exilim], toy digital [visionquest from wal-mart] etc. i really want an old Barbie 35mm plastic camera, even though i have at least 10-15 plastic 35mm toy cameras.

some of the Polaroids are incredible. scanned at hi-res they are impressive. the B&Ws done at chitzen itza are great. too bad i didn't just use the Polaroid Land 210- and fore go the other 6 or 7 cameras i schlepped around there. the color polaroids are not as good as the B&W; but scanned and grayscaled they look better. each camera i used got different results. these fotos below are NOT the best of the lot, but i like the effects. especially the double exposure, which was a happy accident. i processed about 9 rolls of b&w film last week; it took hours; unfortunately i tried using my plastic spools [which are supposed to handle 35mm to 120 film] and the 120 film did not fit. i should've just rolled it back up and waited till i got to my stainless steel spools- but, i threw the roll of film in the cannister and developed it, which ruined a good bit of it all. instead of 3 good BIG negatives of chitzen itza which were on the roll, i got maybe 1 clear one. some older shots from switzerland and elsewhere were on the same roll, and some ruined. c'est la vie. live and learn. patience is indeed a virtue- and one i do not have!

this week began cutting, sleeving, and scanning the negatives which takes even longer than developing them as i scan them between 1200-2400 dpi. some of the stuff was great BUT i've been noticing that a lot of my fotos have been washed out looking- as if the ASA setting, or the f/stops, shutter speeds, were wrong for the shots- not a high enough contrast.

then... i saw a documentary on Ansel Adams on PBS the other night and the nickel [quarter, nowadays] dropped. for one of his most famous shots he used a red filter to get higher contrast/dramatic effect... and always did a lot of dodging and burning, too- to bring out certain areas of the fotos. i always used the red filter [magenta, actually] on my enlarger when printing, to get better B&W contrast, and did indeed do some dodging and burning when printing- but i haven't been printing for the past decade- i've only been scanning negatives and posting fotos online- so i completely forgot about all that... and using filters!

so, i went and dug out some filters i'd bought in brocante/brockenstube in europe- and tried them on two of my better SLRs and Voila! they all fit. i had red, orange and yellow, some clear ones, and also found some dark gray [polarizing] lenses that came with one of the cameras i bought there. i plan to use the filters to finish off the film on those 2 cameras and check the results. why i never thought of this before is beyond me.

i read online that one should always use a yellow filter when shooting outside w/ b&w film. now my curiosity is piqued. on the bus to & from chitzen itza [march 5th] i was sitting by a woman who is some kind of videographer- she had some enormous digital camera w/her. she said when she was in film school she only shot B&W film w/a red filter. "i put a red filter on to shoot everything..." so these 2 different mentions of red filters, were an like an epiphany. i'll post once i have results.

tonight, i ran across these fotos- i made in new orleans in 2006- of shop windows on royal street and bourbon street in 2006. i like shooting shop windows with interesting things in them, especially when they also reflect interesting things! the top two are from royal street; the bottom two of 'marie laveau's house of voodoo' on bourbon street. i always shoot 'the house of voodoo' window whenever i'm there!
